Our story
The West Hawaii Hockey Association
was created 14 years ago by a man named rick Woodland. The early inline skating rink was set up in the Kona public swimming
pool parking lot.
If you look at northwest corner you can still see the
lines and face off circles. After
several years of discussing potential new locations for permanent rink, the existing site at the end of Old Airport was selected.
Generous donations by a local excavation service and concrete company paid off when in 1998 Pepsi had an island
wide celebration. In appreciation of local support for the beverage company, they arranged to have the boards, glass ans scoreboard
installed at the rink. A few years later, lights were installed,
again relying on generous community donations.
Today, we have altogether some 30 players ages 5 to 16, boys and girls playing in the league. the reason officially runs January
through April with regionals held early June in the host island.
WHHA have hosted the island wide regional tournament twice. Kona has taken the gold medal two times in the past 11 years including
2008 at the Regional Championships held in Maui.
